A Night at The Opera: The Marriage of Figaro

A Night at The Opera: The Marriage of Figaro

When attending a comedy, you can expect some laughs. Most importantly, you know that although negative events may transpire, a happy ending is awaiting the characters. Seattle Opera's The Marriage of Figaro is full of tricks, lies and lust all wrapped up neatly in a great comedic bow. The stage direction by the brilliant Aidan Lang gives the audience a unique perspective on this hilarious story. This is a marvelous show for first timers or veterans of any opera house. Be prepared to laugh and try your best to solve the mystery as the thick web of deceit is spun.

There are many twists and turns in The Marriage of Figaro. Without divulging many secrets and going into too much detail, the general plot is as follows. Figaro is a valet to Count Alamaviva and will soon wed Susanna, the maid of the wonderful Countess Alamaviva. Susanna tells Figaro of the Count’s attempts to seduce her in the past. Furious, Figaro swears to teach the Count a lesson. Simultaneously, Figaro is faced with settling an old debt to Marcellina, an unappealing woman from whom he once borrowed money. The woman is represented by Dr. Bartolo and he presents an ultimatum to Figaro, pay up or marry Marcellina. This is a horrible tragedy indeed. With forces acting against him, Figaro creates diversions to trick the Count into thinking his wife, the Countess, is unfaithful, while at the same time trying to keep him unaware of Dr. Bartolo’s plan against Figaro. All the characters in this delightful comedy play their part in the wicked dance of deception. You are constantly asking yourself, “Who is fooling who?” and if you aren’t paying close attention, you may get fooled too.

The Marriage of Figaro is a opera adults of all ages can appreciate. It will continue to run at the McCaw Theatre until January 30th, 2016. For more information on tickets, parking and the cast please visit http://www.mccawhall.com/home. I hope you enjoy the show.
