January Food News: Openings in Fremont & Cap Hill, CoffeeCon & More

Looking back on a year filled with awesome food, it seems like Seattle's restaurant game hit new strides and in 2017, there will be no shortage of new places to try. For those resolving to learn to cook this month, utilize in-season ingredients from leafy greens like kale, roots like beets and radishes, plus leeks, and citrus. Regardless of where your food goals fall in the New Year, here’s the rundown of the latest from the Seattle food scene, including what’s new, what’s closing, and where you can have your next foodie adventure.

Newish

Bar Charlie
Seaplane themed bar swoops in on Stone Way in Fremont. The relaxed neighborhood spot aims to maintain a chill vibe where people can get together and enjoy good food and drinks. Menu items include Hatch Chili Baked Mac and Cheese with Beecher’s Flagship, Poutine with Beecher’s cheese curds, local drafts, spirits, and cocktails.

Thackeray Cafe & Bar
Another Stone Way newbie, Thackeray is a Mediterranean-inspired and veggie friendly gastro-pub from the group behind Purple Café and Meet the Moon. Look for menu items like mezze spreads from muhammarra, whipped feta, and spiced lentil with mains like Lebanese 9 Spice Lamb Shawarma served with fontina, caramelized onions, garlic yogurt, pita, house-cut fries, horiatiki salad.

China Pie
This long awaited Asian Italian fusion joint opened serving up in Fremont bring a new perspective to both cuisines with menu items like an Italian Sausage, Tomato Soup Dumpling with parmesan and the Uncle Sau wood-fired pizza with caramel fish sauce pork, cilantro pesto, jalapeño and fresh mozzarella.

Southpaw
Lark’s John Sundstrom opened his fast casual pizza joint in Fremont joining the likes of Ethan Stowell’s Ballard Pizza Co. The James Beard Award winning chef will slang pizzas like the Middle Eastern-inspired Contender with toppings of green chickpea pesto, feta, za’atar, roasted garlic and cumin. In addition to pizza, Southpaw will also offer “Salt & Sweet” snacks like daily salumi as well as “Garden” items like Burrata with Bill’s honey and Baked Polenta.

Marmite
Erika Burke’s old Chophouse Row space has been filled by Marmite. The new restaurant will serve soups, salads, and sandwiches with a cocktail lounge and full dinner menu coming soon. For now guests can warm up with Chicken and Leek Buckwheat Noodle Soup or Roasted Root Vegetable Soup.

Departing

Gnocchi Bar
Owner Lisa Nakamura shuttered the Cap Hill go-to for gnocchi to focus on bringing her delicious work of art to grocery stores like PCC and Whole Foods. Watch out for Lisa’s gnocchi at pop events like Pike Chocofest in February and at tastings around the city.

Seattle’s Old Spaghetti Factory
After 46 years, the Old Spaghetti Factory on Seattle’s waterfront has closed. This favorite is nostalgic for those who remember it as a Seattle tradition. For anyone who loved their Mizithra Cheese and Browned Butter spaghetti and the complimentary spumoni ice cream as much as I did—you’ll have to go to Lynnwood, Tukwila, or Tacoma.

Foodie Adventures

Paella Cooking Class @ Pintxo: Jan 9/23, 6:30 – 9 pm
Learn to make traditional Spanish paella from Pintxo’s owner Cory Chigbrow and Sous Chef Emelio Sansone. The class includes a sherry tasting, recipes for sauces and paella, and a take home shopping list from the best purveyors around Seattle. 

Tasting Dinner with Mezcal Amaras @ Little Water Cantina: Jan 17, 6 pm
A special evening with Mezcal-inspired food including Chile-Braised Short Ribs with Mezcal-Spiked Pan Sauce paired with the smoky mesquite Mezcal Amaras Cupreata.

Seattle CoffeeCon: Jan 27 – 28
Coffee enthusiasts can band together to talk all things roasting, brewing, and gear. This two day event is meant for the coffee community to meet industry leaders and share in the joy this ever popular Seattle beverage.

Ethan Stowell & Charles Smith: Best of Washington Food & Wine: Jan 27, 6:30 – 10:30 pm
Guests of this dinner series will enjoy a 5 course meal prepared by Ethan Stowell and Goldfinch Tavern’s Joe Ritchie. Courses will be paired with award winning wines from Charles Smith with courses including Whole Roasted Beef Tenderloin, black truffle gnocchi and wilted greens with 2007 Charles Smith, Old Bones Syrah.
