November Food News: Giving Thanks for Dumplings & Whisky

November is finally here which means we are swiftly approaching an entire holiday devoted to eating—and I couldn’t be more excited. This year I’ll be trading in the turkey for Sake and Sushi (read more about my research here). New tradition? Maybe. No matter what you choose to gorge on this month, remember to give thanks for great food and even better company.

Joli

Amy Beaumier (previously of Local 360 and Bell and Whete) opened Joli last month. Nestled between Greenwood and Ballard, this cocktail bar has been a long time coming (almost two years to be exact). Neighborhood patrons can expect a monthly rotating menu with items like Delicata Squash & Burrata with apple, ground cherry, brown butter, and sherry and Mushroom Flatbread with kale, sauce mornay, cured egg yolk, and chili oil.

Happy Grillmore

What started as one of Portland’s famed food trucks has turned into the best burger joint in the Northwest. The husband wife team behind Nate’s Wings and Waffles and Central District Ice Cream opened Happy Grillmore’s Central District location earlier this month. Featured burgers include options like the Spicy Chorizo and Kalua Pork.

Dough Zone

Din Tai Fung’s Eastside competitor landed in the International District in early October bringing another option for dumplings to the masses. Menu items like Green Onion Pancakes, Pork Xioa Long Bao, and their “must try” Q-Bao—pan fried pork buns. 

Gather Kitchen + Bar

Ballard’s newest craft kitchen opened with a menu of upscale shareables and small plates. The globally inspired menu features menu items like Fried Pig Ear Fries with dipping sauce, Fried Cauliflower, with Uncle Chen's Buffalo Sauce, sweet cucumber pickles, and blue cheese mousse, and Slow Roasted Pork belly with clams, piperade, and cilantro.

Closing

Kushi Bar

The Belltown favorite for happy hour, sushi, and more has closed after being priced out of their lease. 

Blue Moon Burgers in SLU

The lunch spot on the Amazon campus has closed but other locations in Fremont, Cap Hill, and Alki remain open for business.

Foodie Adventures

The Whisky Extravaganza, November 10th 7 – 10 pm @ Rainer Club

The Whisky Extravaganza offers whisky enthusiasts from the novice to the connoisseur the opportunity to explore a wide range of the most prestigious single malt, premium Scotch whiskies and other unique whiskies from around the world through educational tasting sessions and hand curated culinary pairings. Teatro ZinZanni Love Chaos Dinner, October 19, 2017-April 29, 2018 @ Marymoor Park

Teatro ZinZanni is taking up their famed Queen Anne show at Marymoor with a dining-themed show that captures the energy of a magical night out. Audience members will enjoy a menu by James Beard Award Winning chef, Jason Wilson, as performers doubling as restaurant staff literally bend over backwards to show a renowned restaurant critic a great night.
