Seaside at Anacortes, Washington

Seaside at Anacortes, Washington
Seventy-five miles north of Seattle, 20.4 miles west of Mount Vernon, on the Puget Sound, lies a secret - a hidden emerald on the banks of Fidalgo Bay - the small seaside destination town of Anacortes, WA. Known as “The Gateway To The San Juans," it is an archipelago of over 400 small islands in Northwest Washington, but it’s a lot more than that. It’s a nature-lover’s paradise, riddled with hiking trails and fresh water boating. It’s a cultural hub, with loads of insanely talented local musicians. There’s also art galleries, museums, places of historical interest, tasty restaurants, modest camping, lavish lodging, and a warm and friendly community. Anacortes is small, but not rural. It’s a cosmopolitan mecca - somewhere between a tourist stop, a college town and a beatnik holdout. Sitting in The Donut House, looking at a vague...

The Jewel of Harney County

The Jewel of Harney County
Off the tiny two-lane highway of State Road 78, roughly 150 miles East of Bend, Or., lies the quaint, intimate, lavish-but-low-key Crystal Crane Hot Springs . Just outside of the tiny town of Crane, OR, it is like a spa, cowboy campground, lodge, and waterpark all in one. The hot springs have been an integral part of life in the area since the early 1900s. Dan and Denise Kryger purchased the property in 1997, bringing Crystal Cranes Hot Springs to what it is today with an extensive series of updates, upgrades, and little touches. Most notable are the cedar-enclosed private bathhouses, which add so much towards appreciating what a world-class spa experience this truly is, in the middle of nowhere. The Kryger's also upgraded the RV and dry-camping, as well as providing other luxury spa services like an on-call massage...

Escape Seattle: Jamaica

Escape Seattle: Jamaica
Seattle in the winter can be tough. For those of us with any sense, it’s time to pack up, ditch the traffic, and cash in your vacation hours to rejuvenate at the beach. But which one? After recently returning from the Caribbean, I would like to recommend Jamaica. Jamaica is home to the world’s fastest man: Usain Bolt, the world’s best rum: Appleton, and the world’s best reggae, including the legend himself: Bob Marley. The island is nothing short of a spicy cultural paradise. Eat the local street food like cheese patties (dough stuffed with beef and cheese), jerk chicken and curried goat. Drink Magnum (tonic wine), Appleton, and whatever once-off special the bartender is slanging by the pool. Where you stay is conducive to what you will do, but regardless of where you are on this magical island, you’ll...
