Headlining names like John Mayer, Bruno Mars, Russ, Khalid, Slightly Stoopid, and more have all headed up to the Pacific Northwest to bless the evergreen state with their presence.  If you think that you have missed out, there is some good news. Seattle summer concerts are far from over. Washington – finally – has that much anticipated blazing summer heat, and there is not a better way to spend it than enjoying live music this August. Festival Review: Upstream Music Fest + Summit

upstream-2017
Photo credit: Rod Mar For three days, Pioneer Square went "Upstream." Over 25 stages featuring 300+ artists were spread out from CenturyLink Field to Occidental Park and beyond. In true Seattle fashion, we experienced some extremely questionable weather during Upstream Fest + Summit . But in between the clouds and downpours, we were blessed with a few fantastic sun breaks that made this fresh festival all the more special. Stages consisted of everything between humble street corners to elaborate set ups where loyal fans danced to the music of their favorite bands. This weekend I made the schlep to the main stage for amazing acts like Deep Sea Diver, Beat Connection, Flying Lotus and Shabazz Palaces, squeezed into clubs like the Comedy Underground for Thunderpussy and Dude York and watched Fauna Shade, Acid Tongue and Tangerine make the Buttnick Building...

A Month of Seattle Concerts

A Month of Seattle Concerts
Deck the Hall Ball
There is always a great concert happening in Seattle. We should consider ourselves lucky that we don’t live in a tiny town where once every ten years a Guns & Roses cover band performs. Every month we have the chance to absorb some great music and this month is no different. Here are December's upcoming concerts any music lover shouldn’t miss. Deck the Hall Ball: Tuesday, December 6th @ Key Arena Once again, 107.7 The End’s Deck the Hall Ball returns to the Key Arena. Last year, we were graced with bands like Twenty One Pilots, Alabama Shakes and Cage the Elephant and this year is looking just as fine with headliners like Empire of the Sun, The Head and The Heart, Jimmy Eat World, Phantogram, Band of Horses and more. This holiday themed concert is the perfect way to...

Festival Review: MusicfestNW Project Pabst

Festival Review: MusicfestNW Project Pabst
Unknown Mortal Orchestra
I bought my ticket for the Project Pabst Sunday show the day they went on sale. Two names stuck out to me on the lineup, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Tame Impala . I had just seen Unknown at Sasquatch and their lively performance was burnt into my brain. And well, I had been obsessed with Tame Impala since the end of 2015 (I know I was late to the party - sue me). I wasn’t going to miss seeing Unknown Mortal Orchestra again and perhaps the once in lifetime opportunity to see Tame Impala. That is until the Bumbershoot lineup was released… so maybe it’ll be twice in a lifetime. After what seemed like forever, the weekend of Project Pabst had finally arrived. I made the trip down with one of my best friends, Dylan. There was nothing but Tame...

Pickathon 2016

Pickathon 2016
photo credit: Pickathon 2016 | Mt. Hood Stage from above l by Liz Devine It's almost astounding that the sylvan paradise of Pendarvis Farm, located in rural Happy Valley, OR., is less than 15 minutes from Downtown Portland. It's like it has a cloak of invisibility around it, protecting it from the outside world. It's this circle of protection that has allowed Pickathon to flourish into its 18th incarnation, the largest yet, with musicians from all over the world and thousands of music fans from all walks of life. This year, Pickathon had the most eclectic lineup than ever before, flourishing far from the festival's traditional music roots. There was hardly a fiddle or banjo in sight. Instead it favored an impressive array of guitar-centric indie rock, some experimental electronica, several African musicians, and a surprising amount of punk, metal and progressive. Over...

One on One with Seattle Artists at Sasquatch!

One on One with Seattle Artists at Sasquatch!
Beat Connection at Sasquatch 2016
If experiencing Sasquatch alone wasn’t great enough already, I had the wonderful opportunity to interview some great Seattle groups like Beat Connection, Grace Love & The True Loves, Tangerine and Thunderpussy as well as Chicago rapper, Sir the Baptist. Beat Connection   CM: I saw you guys recently played a DJ set at Neptune. How does a DJ set work with a 4 man group? Reed: We’re actually working on changing it up a little bit but right now the DJ set is just me. Composition and flow is really important to us when we’re working on records and shows. I started Djing a long time ago, it’s been an important part of the band but it’s not something we do that often. It’s more of a special event because we haven’t quite figured a way to bring everyone into...

Festival Review: Sasquatch! 2016

Festival Review: Sasquatch! 2016
Beat Connection at Sasquatch! 2016
Sasquatch! is four full days of music, arts and communion that takes place at the world famous Gorge Amphitheatre. Each day is jam packed of musical acts where it’s physically impossible to see them all. Every little nook and cranny of the Gorge Amphitheatre you’ll find work by Sasquatch! artist, Ryan “Henry” Ward and other featured visual artists. And of course, what is a festival without some friends to enjoy it with? How do you sum up such a crazy event like Sasquatch!? For me, the answer is simple. Five bands who made my trip to Sasquatch! are Alabama Shakes , Allen Stone , Beat Connection , Deep Sea Diver and Mac DeMarco . It was not only the power of their music which resonated with me so well, but also their ability to connect with the crowd that made...

Mic Check: J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar

Mic Check: J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar
What classifies as good hip hop these days? Is it the repetitive hooks and choruses? Lyrics that are dominated by violence, drugs, alcohol and women? Or singing the same sad ol’ autotuned song time and time again? No. Real hip hop seems to be sitting in the shadows lately. Although motifs like sex, drugs, alcohol and violence are present in all hip hop, in great hip hop these subjects are not simply thrown at you and they are not the primary focus. They are details of stories. Stories that give birth to thoughts. Thoughts that inspire and connect with you in some sort of way. That is what good music, of any genre, is all about. Two MC's who are doing exactly this are J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar. J. Cole’s 2014 Forest Hills Drive from start to finish is...
