5 Artists to Look Out for in 2016

5 Artists to Look Out for in 2016

Sometimes as we age, we begin to appreciate the old and doubt the new. I believe that is especially true with music. It is so easy to get stuck on the music you grew up with and feel hesitant towards any new artists. Don’t spend your life in your dark, unwilling to explore! Here are 5 new & upcoming artists to shatter those old thoughts of yours and redefine modern music.

*These are in no particular order, they’re all amazing*

Tame Impala
Tame Impala’s sound is infected with psychedelic rock influences. Their funky basslines, melodic guitar riffs, delayed and reverbed vocals are extremely refreshing and impressive. This Australian group’s albums have already gone gold and platinum in their home country, but they are now making big waves in America with their 3rd album, Currents. Currents is amazing start to finish but for just a taste of this band, listen to “Let It Happen”. I hate the cliché of “you’ve never heard anything like [band name]”, but in the case of Tame Impala it’s true. Do yourself a favor and look them up immediately.

Alina Baraz & Galimatias
Alina Baraz is a Californian singer while Galimatias is a producer from Denmark. Alina found Galimatias on SoundCloud, wrote lyrics to an instrumental and sent it to the producer. Thus, Urban Flora was born and released in May of 2015. Alina’s silky smooth voice and dreamy lyrics resonate perfectly with Galimatias’ wavy basslines, soft melodies and hard hitting drums. “Can I” is a personal favorite of mine off their album. You can find both of these artists on SoundCloud as well as their collaborative EP Urban Flora.

Although their Facebook hilariously explains the band being made up of two Japanese girls in love with R&B…. BenZel is made up of producers Benny Blanco and Two Inch Punch. Benny Blanco has produced for Katy Perry and Wiz Khalifa while Two Inch Punch has produced for Sam Smith and Brian Eno. Together, BenZel has already worked with artists like Juicy J, Chance the Rapper, Cashmere Cat, Jessie Ware and Tory Lanez. Their beats can support rappers like Juicy J, singers like Jessie Ware or stand completely on their own.

Listen to “If You Love Me” featuring Jessie Ware to get a feel for them.

RÜFÜS DU SOL or just RÜFÜS is a 3 piece alternative dance group from Australia. They just finished their world tour, accompanying Seattle’s Odesza for five shows in America. They have also toured Australia with Odesza in the past. Their sophomore album, Bloom, will be released on January 22nd. “You Were Right” is one of my favorites from the group. If you a fan of deep, funky dance music you will enjoy RÜFÜS DU SOL.

Tory Lanez
He sings like The Weeknd and raps like Kendrick Lamar. Tory Lanez can belt beautiful choruses and then spit fire verses, switching between the two like its nothing. Commonly he works with electronic producers and recently signed to Benny Blanco’s record label, Mad Love.
