S’more to Love on National S’mores Day

Epic camping tradition; warm, indulgent dessert; iconic pop tart flavor; decadent milkshake made better with Kahlua. What’s not to love about s’mores. The best thing about s’mores is that, like any social tradition, they’re best enjoyed with friends or family and usually invoke some kind of nostalgic memory. Sure, things have been a bit smoky around here, but whether there’s a fire ban, coal ban, or any other kind of ban hindering your last month of summer, there’s still time to make s’more memories with these Seattle spots and recipe ideas.

Urban Camping @ Shelter Lounge
Head to Ballard to enjoy the complimentary s’mores set up at Shelter Lounge. Even in inclement (or highly smoky weather) the indoor fire pits lend a convenient spot to camp out with your squad and get down on summer’s best free dessert.

Have a Backyard S’mores Session with Hot Cakes’ Cold-Smoked Chocolate
Hot Cakes Molten Chocolate Cakery has done everything from s’mores milkshakes, to s’mores hot cocoa, s’mores DIY kits, and then of course there's the s'mores cake: smoked Molten Chocolate Cake (photo above) with a house-roasted marshmallow, vanilla ice cream, and graham cracker topping. They’re currently selling their famous Cold-Smoked Chocolate Chip and the sweet savory combo is perfect to sprinkle on rocky road ice cream, mix into summer-style chocolate chip cookies, or just eat straight out of the jar. Enjoy anywhere from the comforts of your own back patio to beachside at Golden Gardens.

Take Tradition to the Next Level @ Revel
You can never go wrong with a spin on s’mores off the dessert menu. Skip the great outdoors and go a more luxurious route by ordering dessert from Seattle’s best. Revel serves up their highly praised version of the s’more in Fremont. The dessert  features Revel’s signature flavors with a miso caramel brownie tart, pretzel crust, toasted marshmallow, gochujang ganache, and fried chocolate.

Try Something New
But wait, there’s more. Happy campers can switch out Hershey’s for Ghirardelli Dark & Sea Salt Caramel Chocolate, add bacon into the mix, or even use bacon instead of a graham cracker. These substitutions are so easy and will give you a brand new outlook on the s'mores game.

If you’re camping in front of Netflix (don't judge me), prepare essential snacks like S’mores Icebox Cake. This guilty pleasure recipe is super simple and delicious. Invite friends over and fire up something that's been hot lately like GOT. Then all that's left is sharing your summer s'mores accomplishments—with any luck you may even forget about all the camping you were planning to do this summer.

S’mores Icebox Cake

2 3/4 c. heavy cream, divided

1 7-oz. jar marshmallow crème

1 1/2 c. Mini Marshmallows, divided

1 11-oz. bag semisweet chocolate chips (or try it with Hot Cakes Cold-Smoked Chocolate)

1 box graham crackers

Chopped chocolate (and/or bacon), for garnish

  1. 1. Beat 2 cups cream for 5 minutes until peaks form. Add marshmallow crème and keep beating for 3 minutes. Stir in 1 cup mini marshmallows and set aside.
  2. 2. Heat remaining 3/4 cup heavy cream until simmering. Remove from heat and pour over chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl. Let sit 5 minutes, then stir until combined and creamy.
  3. 3. In a 9"-x-9" baking dish, layer of marshmallow cream, graham crackers, marshmallow cream, then ganache. Repeat layers until you reach the top.
  4. 4. Top with mini marshmallows and graham cracker and refrigerate at least 4 hours, but preferably overnight. Before serving, Broil for 5 minutes to toast marshmallows then freeze until cool.
